Welcome to Monroe County, GA

Monroe County Animal Shelter Closed to New Dog Intakes Until Aug. 3; Shelter Remains Open for Dog Adoptions

Due to a present staff shortage and the need for facility maintenance improvements, the Monroe County Animal Shelter will temporarily close operations to the public, which includes the intake of dogs, effective immediately.

The Monroe County Animal Shelter will fully re-open to the public in three weeks on Monday, Aug. 3 under the leadership of new Animal Services Manager, Jennifer McGettigan.

In the meantime, the public is asked to contact 9-1-1 in case of a dog emergency. If you have a situation involving a dog that is not an emergency but needs the attention of law enforcement, please contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s non-emergency phone number at 478-994-7010.

Despite the closure for dog intakes over the next three weeks, dog adoptions are still encouraged during this time. If you are interested in adopting a dog at the shelter, please visit the shelter in person at 157 L. Cary Bittick Drive.

Over the three weeks that the Shelter is closed, McGettigan will be working closely with Monroe County’s administrative staff and the Monroe County Board of Commissioners in establishing new guidelines, policies, and procedures for the Animal Shelter, converting the Animal Shelter’s record documentation system from a manual one to an automated one, re-organizing the leadership structure of the Animal Shelter as needed, hiring new Animal Shelter staffers as needed, and thoroughly cleaning the Animal Shelter facility.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that this Animal Shelter closure may cause. However, we are excited about the future of Monroe County Animal Services under McGettigan’s leadership and are fully committed to continuing to provide the essential services that the Shelter furnishes daily for our county’s dog population.
